Steven Jay Rubin is a fascinating character. He grew up a movie lover, seeing as many as six films a week in the movie theater across the street from his home. He also loved to write and got an opportunity to combine the two by writing reviews and in-depth critiques of films for Chicago-based Cinefantastique magazine (a go-to publication for movie buffs). His articles were so well written, other publications ran his reviews. His reputation as a writer-researcher grew. He wrote the James Bond Movie Encyclopedia (now in its 4th edition) and the Twilight Zone’s Encyclopedia. Each covers every aspect of these productions.
Steve thinks out of the box. He explained his creative process and how by listening to the soundtracks of classic films (instead of music), he is inspired by the dialogue. By listening to the audio of the movie “A Diary of Anne Frank” Steve was inspired to write, “The Cat Who Lived With Anne Frank”, a children’s book for them to learn about the dark history of Amsterdam in the 1940’s; from the point of view of the cat.
Steve’s favorite movie genre is Sci-Fi. Having written a lengthy article on the film classic ”The Day the Earth Stood Still” he had the answer to a question I’ve had since I was a kid. What does “Klaatu barada nikto” mean. He also gave his elevator pitch for a script entitled, “Twelve Anxious Men” a spoof of the movie Classic “Twelve Angry Men”.
We ended our conversation by agreeing that we need more comedies. We all need to laugh, now more than ever.
