AbFab followed Edina “Eddy” Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley), a pair of high-powered career women on the London fashion scene. Eddy ran her own Public Relations firm, and Patsy held a cushy position at a top British fashion magazine. The two women used their considerable financial resources to indulge in alcohol, recreational drugs, and to chase the latest fads in an attempt to maintain their youth and recapture their glory days as Mods in Swinging London. Their lifestyle inevitably led to a variety of personal crises, which were resolved by Eddy’s daughter, Saffron “Saffy” Monsoon (Julia Sawalha), whose constant involvement in their exploits have left her increasingly bitter and cynical.
Absolutely Fabulous the Movie picks up where the series left off, with the same characters, cast and antics. So if you loved AbFab the series, you will laugh out loud at some of the zany exploits of Eddy and Patsy in the movie.
In this case, Eddy accidentally knocks Kate Moss into the Thames and the supermodel is thought to be dead, forcing Eddy and Patsy to go on the run – to the south of France and luxury.
The ridiculousness is obvious and often hysterical, but the fun is in the subtle facial expressions and perfectly timed, deadpan delivery between Edina Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley). The added thrill of “fiction vs. reality” had Kate Moss, Stella McCartney and LuLu playing themselves.
AbFab was Absolutely Fabulous. Thank you Eddy and Patsy for being the ladies every lady has a bit of inside them, even if it’s just a tiny bit! I, for one, look forward to your next adventure.
