Stewart and I (Dena) recently had an opportunity to meet up with acclaimed flautist (flute-player) Nestor Torres at the Cafe at Books & Books on Lincoln Road. As painters, Stewart and I often listen to his smooth sound while we work.
While Stewart and Nestor talked, I filmed their conversation (and listened) to what Nestor had to say about his phenomenal career as a flautist – educated in both Jazz and Classical music; the terrible celebrity-boat race accident he was in back in 1990 and his miraculous recovery; his strong belief in Nichiren Buddhism; his many performances with top Latin musicians and singers; what it was like for him when in 2001 he was the winner of the Latin Grammy award for Best Pop Instrumental Album, This Side of Paradise; his new music; and his current position as a faculty member at FIU (Florida International University) and his role as the founding director of its School of Music’s first Charanga ensemble.
As a very special treat, Nestor played his flute for us!
